Our Pedal-Powered Generator

We've been honoured to have been involved with providing a pedal-powered sound system since 2004. Early that year cyclist friend Bob introduced me to Cathi Yarrow who provided the initial ideas and enthusiasm, and by July the three of us were amplifying Seize the Day at the Druid Camp.

Pedal Generator

Since then we've improved the system a little, and have also run a stage at other events - the Permaculture gathering in 2004, green fairs in Kingston, Fulham, Deptford and Brentford, and of course Druid Camp and Lammas Games this year.

The system consists of pedal generators - converted bicyles driving car alternators, a central battery, and then an audio system running entirely on 12v power, mainly using existing equipment I already had. We've added solar panels as a useful extra source of power, and now have various lighting options for evening events, and even simple radio mics.

As well as music concerts, we've accommodated AGM meetings, children's entertainers, and DJs. We're keen to make the system as flexible as possible, whilst maintaining a green, low-power approach where possible re-using existing facilities, or building equipment from scrap.

Assistance at events is always welcome; we always need volunteers to pedal the generators, but also anyone who is more interested in the technical aspects of the system, please talk to us.

We still haven't managed to come up with a name for our system, but we do have a website we're adding information to when we can - http://www.pedalpa.org.uk - contact details are there too.
